NEVER TOO SMALL: Large Living Room To Tiny Apartment, UK 34sqm/365sqft
Head to www.nts-store.com/collections/bundles to grab all our publications at one discounted bundle price.
Once a dated living room in his family's ancestral West Sussex home, this 34 sqm apartment was designed and built by Jonathan Stanway of Dousters by subdividing the original home. Stanway's contemporary design features a series of solid, glass, and curtain partitions, transforming the open area into separate zones, providing privacy when needed whilst maximising space and light. A cleverly designed bedroom box with a raised wall to wall storage bed adjoins a minimalist kitchen with a sleek built in breakfast bar. A glass partition separates a spacious and fully equipped home office which easily converts into a guest bedroom by way of a bed that seamlessly folds out of the integrated storage wall. With its careful and considered design, this apartment strikes the perfect balance between functionality and luxury.

Very nicely designed home. The only slightly negative thing for me would be to have a window behind my head in the bed. The rest of the apartment was extremely nice. Beautiful contrast of the kitchen with the wood. And the backs of the dining room seats matching the kitchen colour gives great balance. Great work.

Nicely done with a few simple errors which others have point out. I personally would never put a separate office space in a rental (and certainly not one that is larger than the "master bedroom"), and would have rejigged the space usage to design a main bedroom with an adjacent bathroom as an ensuite, but with a Jack & Jill access so that guests don't have to enter via the bedroom. For those living outside the UK, you would probably be shocked/horrified at how much they are probably renting this apartment out for in this location.

After opening by saying the house had been divided in to 4 seperate flats I literally gasped at the external shot. The small spaces, or super small ones like this, shown on this channel make sense when they are in urban environments. The size of this one/ choice to make 4 flats rather than 2/ 3 bigger ones just doesn't make sense. I agree with the comments at the end of the video regarding affordability of housing for young people but the answer isn't to cram a living space in to what was used as a living room by the previous generation. Surely this isn't really rented out and is instead used as an example of the guys design abilities .... but if I'm wrong I'd be interested to know how much it costs somebody per month.

Lovely design and very practical except for the pocket door for the bathroom which I find isn’t soundproof enough for such a private space and the kitchen cupboard door and fridge on the right which open the wrong way.

Really sorry to say so, even if I'm the only one, but I really don't like this one and do not even look at it as a place to live in, except for the garden view... Feels either like a sad unpersonal and not very convenient B&B suitable just for a couple of nights, either I see it a " style space example" in some Ikea store. Those kitchen doors opening the wrong way because you did not read the mounting instructions or because you won't use them so you didn't care to think it over...that glass door of any 60's administrative office you'd hate to work in, but at home : what a great feeling ! ...... that "table" or counter so narrow you could never put an italian plate for pasta on it and where you can eat only being perched on those uncomfortable stools or standing.... I don't feel the space, I only see a big void on one side and cluster on the other. Anyway even young, I didn't want to crawl to go to bed even occasionnaly, so every night... Again, except for the view, everything feels sad, blank and uncomfortable to me, really sorry. 🥺

Excellent use of 34m2 except for lack of dining table. I disagree with you all complaining the lack of to because it’s as easy to watch stuff on computer, laptop or projector, but a dining table is essential. It is sociable. It is more comfortable and better for our bodies - see how absurd he looked hunched on stool over countertop! And a dining table can be used for work. So, in that space I would forsake the separate study and integrate the space making room for dining table that can be used as a desk. His desk-into-guest-bed is nifty but less essential than dining table.

Raising the table against the wall to create more space and exposing the art work underneath the table is brilliant! It is a functionally efficient design and wonderfully complements the room, essentially creating two different spaces depending on whether the table is lowered for use or raised when not in use.

The overall design is lovely, bright and well-thought out for a small space. it packs a lot into 34sqm! bathroom feels large. Trade-offs are choices. In my case, I think I would choose to trade the perception of larger living room floor area for more storage. flip the bed and extend the kitchen wall for more accessible storage, with a full length wall mirror echoing the bathroom door to bounce light. sliding shoji-style doors could still close the bed off as wanted and it could have living room facing joinery below to max storage.

When you're pretentious and removed from the real world that changing a functional living space into an impractical nightmare of an apartment is considered "fun" or "artsy". That kitchen is definitely designed by someone who has never cooked. Oh look a kitchen that's def too small for a "Never Too Small" titled channel 🤣

This place starts off absolutely beautiful, then absolutely falls apart for basic functionality: You can't access your clothes without climbing on over your bed. Glass doors seal off a tight office /sleeping space with no windows/ventilation -- you will suffocate or get extremely stuffy very fast. A fully mirrored wall faces your toilet 2 feet away, so you can stare into your own eyes while you're doing your business.

I’d find it tiring to get dressed by pulling one garment out from under the bed, then climb over the bed to grab another, then off to the guest room to get my shirt, etc. Also, like all these tiny homes, where does one keep “stuff”? Your gym bag, your vacuum cleaner, golf clubs, luggage, toolbox…

Beautiful in so many ways. But I miss an entrance space, divided and stepped in from outside , somewhere to take off muddy shoes and store them, along with coats, car keys and other outside world things. Entering directly in the living space seems unpractical in the given climate.

I think that maybe taking that same nautical reference used int the bedroom but in the use of colours, like trying a wider palette of darker and warmer woodtones would help to reduce the feeling of the space feeling sometimes like a gallery or like an office waiting room. I don't know why they chose to match that texture of the office wall inside the bathroom (?). Aslo, glass walls are too harsh and rarely related to warmth, maybe fluted or other glass texture would help reducing that corporate-ascetic vibe.

The living room looks quite uncomfortable! No chill out sofas. Looks too sterile for me and not enough storage. Also I hate having to crawl in and out of bed. I have a campervan and this is my main hate, Lol, Making the bed is a laborious chore!
